Gorgeous camellia jewelry box
The camellia has been used in Shinto rituals as a sacred tree to herald the arrival of spring because its green leaves do not wither in winter and its bright red flowers bloom in early spring.
Native to Japan, the camellia has been familiar to the Japanese people since ancient times, and is mentioned in the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters), Nihonshoki (Chronicles of Japan), and Manyoshu (Anthology of Myriad Leaves).
Mother-of-pearl is used for the camellia flowers, creating a highly prestigious decorative box in which the beauty and skill of maki-e can be appreciated.
The inside is lined with velvet, so it can be used as a jewelry box.
