The box carved in the shape of a chrysanthemum
This box is carved in the shape of a chrysanthemum.
The carving is lacquered carefully one brush stroke at a time.
You can fully enjoy the beautiful luster of the lacquer when it catches the light.
The white color of the lacquer has a unique mellow beige hue.
Chrysanthemums were introduced to Japan from China during the Nara period (710-794) for medicinal purposes.
In the Heian period (794-1185), chrysanthemum banquets were held at court on Chou-you-no-Sekku to pray for long life by drinking chrysanthemum sake, and numerous chrysanthemum poems were composed at poetry gatherings.
This small box is made with the wish for longevity in the chrysanthemum carving.
